COLOMBOcrashbandicoot2ps2, Augcrashbandicoot2ps2. 25 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka began transporting solid waste by train on Sunday for the first time in the country's history, a senior official at the railway department announced.

S.S. Mudalige, general manager of Railways, said the waste, collected in the country's Western Province, was transported to a landfill in Puttalam in the country's northwestern province.

He said the garbage was transported in 20 large containers.

The Western Province produces 3,500 tons of waste per day, which is 60 percent of the country's total, according to official data.

The solid waste management project in Puttalam has been cited as a sustainable solution to the country's solid waste problem by successive governments.
